My mom really needs to stop telling me what I NEED to do in order to be successful in this world. From what she keeps telling, she really doesn’t seem to get it. Her view of success is so narrow-minded. Success comes in so many different forms. Yes, it’s nice if you’re not struggling to live on your own. However, society forces this idea on us that we need money and a nice home to be truly successful. What about the people who are doing what they absolutely love, but struggle to keep a home or feed themselves? Are they unsuccessful because they don’t have enough money to live a comfortable life? To me, those who continue doing what they love despite the hardships they overcome daily are the most inspiring people. No mom, I don’t want to live on the streets or have to go without eating for days because I can’t afford food. But I don’t need to go to a “good” university to meet amazing minds. I want to help out the world through my actions and art, not subject myself to becoming a cookie-cutter clone. So let me ask you this: would you rather me be happy doing something and love and care about, or have me sacrifice my happiness for your belief that an academic college is going to make me successful?
